The Tempo Studio Costs $2,495. Here's What the $39-a-Month Membership Actually Locks You Out Of.

The Tempo Studio costs $2,495. It doesn't work without a membership. Not "works but loses features" like some of its competitors — Tempo's own support team says it directly: unless you're joining someone else's household plan, you need the hardware, and the hardware needs the $39-a-month membership to do anything at all. There's no free mode. Run that membership for three years and you've paid $3,899 for a mirror that tracks your squat depth. Run it for five and you're at $4,835.

Tempo's whole pitch is the camera. The camera is also the leash.

Tempo's differentiator was never the weight plates. It's the 3D sensor built into the base of the unit — the thing that watches your bar path and your squat depth and tells you, in real time, that your knees are caving in. That's a genuinely good idea. Computer vision coaching is the reason people bought this instead of a stack of dumbbells from Facebook Marketplace.

But the coaching is the membership. There's no "use the sensor for free, pay for the class library" split like Hydrow's Just Row mode. Tempo's own membership FAQ is blunt about it: outside of joining an existing Tempo household, you need the machine, and — per the company's own pricing page — the $39-a-month membership is what "gives your household complete access" to the strength, HIIT, mobility, cardio, and recovery programming that the hardware is built to run. Take away the subscription and you own a $2,495 mirror with a sensor that has nothing to talk to.

The three-year math

Start with the hardware: $2,495 for the Starter Package. Add the membership Tempo requires you to carry — $39 a month, sold in 12-month prepaid blocks at $420 a year, with an initial 12-month commitment baked into the purchase. Over three years, that's $2,495 plus $1,260 in membership ($420 × 3), which lands at roughly $3,755 to $3,899 depending on how the prepay cycles land. Stretch it to five years and you're paying somewhere in the $4,600–$4,835 range for equipment that, per Tempo's own site, still can't run a workout without an active plan.

Compare that to a rope. $49.99. It works the day you open the box, it works five years later, and there's no support article explaining which parts of it stop functioning if you skip a payment.

The pattern, again

Peloton raised its Bike price and its membership fee in the same announcement. Tonal requires a 12-month membership just to power the machine on. Hydrow at least lets you row without a subscription, even if it strips out everything except the basics. Tempo doesn't offer that middle ground — the sensor that's the entire reason to buy the thing is inert without a paid plan, full stop.

This isn't a coincidence across four different companies. It's the business model. Connected fitness hardware is sold at a loss, or close to it, because the money is in the recurring membership attached to it. The hardware is the customer acquisition cost. You're not buying a mirror or a rower or a bike — you're signing up for a subscription that happens to ship with a $2,000-plus deposit required up front.

You paid $2,495 for a machine with a camera in it. Without the membership, the camera has nothing to say to you.

None of this means the coaching technology is bad — the form-tracking idea is a real innovation. It means the ownership model is the same one every piece of connected fitness hardware runs: pay for the box, then keep paying to unlock what the box does. A tool that just works, permanently, for a fraction of the up-front cost, is a different category entirely.
